Soul of Music City Vol. 1 - Furs and Fedoras Edition!

Hey SFPC Fam!

Our next show is Saturday January 11th. We are proud to be in our third year of residency at Nashville’s best intimate venue, the City Winery! Tickets on sale today at 3pm!

The Soul Food Poetry Cafe is excited to welcome the award-winning national spoken word artist Huggy Bear Da Poet to our stage to kick off our 2020 show series, Soul of Music City! People loved the All-White theme and begged for another way to dress to impress... this one will be the FURS AND FEDORAS Edition! Ladies feel free to put on your favorite winter look and add that fur coat, jacket, vest, or stole! And gentlemen bring out those fedoras, ascots, and suits! As always, the dress code is optional - do you!

Huggy Bear Da Poet was born and raised in Mobile, Alabama. Known for his gritty, street corner poet persona, Huggy has graced many cultural stages, from the Apache Cafe in Atlanta, to the Nuyorican Cafe in New York City, to the famous Busboys and Poets in Washington DC. He has shared the stage with such greats as Nikki Giovanni, Jesse Jackson, Jill Scott, Fantasia, and Rickey Smiley. Huggy often performs poetry that examines the need for social justice. He writes from the heart and performs from the soul. He uses spoken word to motivate, empower, and even agitate audiences toward social change. His in-your-face style helps listeners examine their hearts and face their personal fears.

Huggy Bear Da Poet is nationally known and one of the most celebrated spoken word artists in the country. He is credited with pioneering the modern spoken word movement along the Gulf Coast.

Huggy is self-published author. "Love, Laughter, Heartache and Pain" takes readers on a walk through his life’s journey. Themes in his book include political awareness and the struggle of the black family. Huggy writes from real experiences which were brought forth through the tears of pain, the joys of happiness, and the life lessons in between. Huggy Bear is very active in the community and generously volunteers in workshops at churches, schools, and mentoring programs all around the country.

Huggy's prolific spoken word albums "Where I Was" and "New Growth" followed the book, continuing to engage his listeners in raw truth. In his travels, Huggy spits poems of social resistance and captures both the pain and triumph of being black in today’s society. Through spoken word, Alex “Huggy Bear” Lofton II hopes that social change will not be revolutionary, but evolutionary in that it will be the ultimate tool in our struggle to make Black America better.

We are excited to welcome Huggy Bear Da Poet to the City Winery Nashville!
