M-Dot Da Poet: Da Man. Da Mic. Da Music.

Marquise Person, artistically known as M-Dot da Poet, is originally from Chicago Illinois. He moved to Nashville from Jackson, Tennessee in 2011. M-Dot attended Middle Tennessee State University where he honed in on his love for poetry, and found a group of like-minded artists on campus: The Word Up! Poetry Collective.

M-Dot burst on the Nashville spoken word scene in July of 2011 at Soul Food Poetry Café, hosted by Nashville poet Imani Rhema. Since then, he has perfected his craft as a performer and has added another artistic vein to his repertoire: Author. M-Dot has published 3 books: "Poetically Speaking", "LateNiteWriting Vol. 1", and "Poet...Speak".

In 2012, M-Dot co-founded the That's That Juice Movement to help promote the awareness of the craft of spoken word, provide a stage for up-and-coming and seasoned artists, and produce poetry events around the Middle Tennessee area. #Thatsthatjuice then spawned his own open mic series, "A Night with da Poet & Friends", a creative production featuring local artists, dancers and lyricists.

M-Dot da Poet continues as an ongoing member of Word Up! and spends time mentoring students on MTSU’s campus in the art of spoken word poetry. He continues to promote his brand as well as the spoken word community of Nashville... one show, one mic, one poem at a time.

In September of 2016, he released his first spoken word EP, "Da Ode to Harlem" which is now available on Soundcloud. Here is the link below:

M-Dot is excitedly anticipating his opportunity to represent spoken word as our featured poet, and looks forward to sharing his craft with us at the Poetic Soul Sessions on Saturday November 5th. Don’t miss his phenomenal performance! See below for the ticket link!

Introducing...ARICA! Our Featured Vocalist at Poetic Soul Sessions Volume I.

"Arica possesses a rich, powerful, and soulful voice.  She is a trained professional with captivating vocal skills”.

“Her melodic voice effortlessly manages all genres of music to include jazz, Negro spirituals, neo-soul, pop, R&B or classical”.

“She is a true song stylist and sings for the pure joy of it.

Arica is an accomplished performer who hails from Indianapolis, IN.  Arica exhibited a talent for performing at an early age.  She regularly earned leading roles in elementary school plays, sang, and played the flute.  She honed her artistry in musical performance through middle and high school, landing a spot in top singing group, The Madrigals, in her freshman year and sang with them throughout her high school career.  She performed in some of the top venues in the city of Indianapolis, and continued gaining accolades singing the national anthem during various events, with orchestras, and her girl group “Spectrum”.

Arica moved on to Fisk University, and during her freshman year, she was immediately accepted to the Grammy-Nominated World Renowned Fisk University Jubilee Singers. This gave her the exposure she needed in Music City! Arica sang background vocals with Grammy winners: Take 6, Willie Nelson, Michael McDonald, Trisha Yearwood, and appeared in a Shania Twain video!  Once again she was asked to perform our national anthem and this time it was for a celebrity basketball game for Keith Bullock of the Tennessee Titans. Arica has performed all across the country; even internationally at The Umbria Jazz Festival in Umbria, Italy.
Recently relocated back to the south, Arica is now performing at sold out events all around Nashville, Atlanta and Indianapolis.

Arica credits her love of performing to her mother (the first voice she heard singing), Anita Baker, Stephanie Mills, Angela Winbush, Phyllis Hyman, and Ledisi. These influences, studying music, working with great talent, and her gift from God has made her an unstoppable force to be reckoned with!

Don’t miss her show stopping performance at the Poetic Soul Sessions! Click below for your ticket – they’re moving fast!
